Truth is in the ground. Seems like it’s dead and buried.
From the Times of Israel:
Hundreds of Umm al-Fahm residents attended the funeral of Ahmed Muhammad Mahameed in the northern city early Tuesday morning, with participants chanting praise for him.
Fireworks were lit in the town to mark the return of the body, and hundreds attended the funeral. During the procession participants chanted, “In spirit and blood we will redeem you martyr.” Full article here
What did he do to deserve this posthumous honor?
Multiple news sources report that Mahameed, walking from the direction of the Temple Mount in Jerusalem, approached a group of Israeli policemen and attempted to stab one of them. In the ensuing scuffle one of the policemen shot and killed him before he was able to carry out the foul deed.
This story is nothing new. In fact it’s been happening for years and years. Which only makes it worse. When you have lies that are repeated enough times, people start thinking it’s the truth.
Clearly the attendees of the funeral in Umm al-Fahm think that Mahameed truly is a martyr. To play devil’s advocate, Mahameed himself may have thought he was doing a most noble act. He was prepared to, and in actuality did, give his life for his people. If this was indeed his thought, it was only possible because an entire society has let themselves be led astray, bit by bit, until they think that cold-blooded murder is a noble act of martydom!
Truly it does seem that the Truth is dead and buried.
However, maybe we can find a glimmer of hope.
From the Midrash :
When God was creating the world, [ the Angel of] Truth protested against the creation of a world that would be full of falsehood. God took Truth and threw it to the ground, as per the verse in Daniel (8:12): “וְתַשְׁלֵךְ אֱמֶת אַרְצָה – You throw Truth to the ground…”
God then bid Truth to rise from the ground, as stated in Psalms (85:12): “אֱמֶת מֵאֶרֶץ תִּצְמָח – Truth will sprout from the ground…”
It seems that now more than ever we are living in the time when Truth has well and truly been thrown down to the ground. The absurd and hypocritical positions that so many accept as dogma nowadays is shocking. People are afraid to speak honestly. They bury the truth deep within themselves.
Perhaps the Midrash is telling us that the time will come when Truth is so obscured, and so-called reality so twisted and perverted, that it will have no way to go but upward, and it will “sprout forth from the ground”. That is to say, the state of being in the ground, buried and rotting, will itself cause Truth to sprout forth. Like a seed that needs to break down before it can start to grow.
Here’s a good example:
Interestingly, the scion of King David is referred to as “צמח – sprout” many times throughout Scripture.
Behold, days are coming — the word of God— when I will establish a righteous sprout from David; a king will reign and prosper and he will administer justice and righteousness in the land. (Jeremiah 23:15)
In those days, at that time, I will cause a sprout of righteousness to sprout forth for David, and he will administer justice and righteousness in the land. (ibid. 33:15)
On that day God’s sprout will come forth for splendor and honor; and the fruit of the land will be for pride and glory for the survivors of Israel. (Isaiah 4:2)
…behold, I am bringing My servant, צמח/Zemah. (Zechariah 3:8)
…there is a man, his name is צמח/Zemah, and from below he will sprout; he will build the Sanctuary of God. (ibid. 6:12)
So perhaps Truth is not dead and buried, merely germinating, and waiting for just the right conditions when it can sprout forth and bloom.
Let it be soon.
